Members of the Governing Council

The Governing Council consists of the Chairman who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the University, the Vice Chancellors (Administration and Academic) a representative of the Federal Ministry of Education, four persons appointed by the National Council of Ministers representing broad national interests, four persons appointed by the Senate from its members, one persons each appointd by the Congregation and the Convocation among their members and the Registrar as Secretary to Concil. The Council is the highest policy-making organ of the University.

Pro Chancellor & Chairman Dr. Samuel Osaigbovo Ogbemudia (born September 17, 1932) is a Nigerian former army officer and politician. He was military Governor (1967–1975) of the Mid-West State, later renamed Bendel State, part of which in turn became Edo State.He joined the Nigeria army in 1957, training at Teshie, Ghana and at Netheravon and Salisbury Plain in England (1957). He attended the officer cadet school at Aldershot, England in 1960, and was commissioned second lieutenant in 1961. He attended the United States army special welfare school at Fort Bragg, South Carolina in 1962. Ogbemudia served with the United Nations peacekeeping force in the Congo for 16 months, and served in Tanzania in 1964. He was appointed as an instructor to the Nigerian Military School, Zaria in 1964.

Michael Umale Adikwu, a Professor of pharmaceutics was born on the 19th of April, 1963 in Edumoga, Okpokwu local government area of Benue state. He attended St. Paul’s Catholic School, Utonkon(1970-1975), Federal Government College, Jos(1976-1981),University of Nigeria, Nsukka(1981-1986),where he graduated with a Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Degree, Master of Pharmacy(M.Pharm), in1989 and a Doctor of Philosophy(Ph.D.)Degree in 1994. A 1982 graduate of English from the University of Ibadan, Professor Kolawole holds Masters and Doctorate degrees in English from the same University which he obtained between 1987 and 1990.
He started his teaching career at the University of Ibadan as a Teaching Assistant between 1987 and 1990. He also taught at St. Andrews College of Education between 1983 and 1992 before joining the University of Abuja, Department of English and Literary Studies, in 1992 where he rose to the rank of Professor in 2006.
In the course of his career, Professor Kolawole has had many publications to his credit. These include one creative work, “Doomsday of the Mastodon” (2001), co-authored a book and contributed chapters in twelve other books. Also to the credit of Professor Kolawole are over 21 articles in local and foreign journals. This is in edition to the over 15 conferences he attended locally and abroad where he contributed papers.
Professor Kolawole has supervised seven PhD researches, fourteen Masters research students and more than 100 undergraduate students. Read more ....

Professor Sani Abubakar Mashi graduated from Bayero University Kano, (BUK) in 1988 with a Bachelors degree in Geography. He holds a Masters degree in Soil Geography from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria (1995) and a Doctorate in Environmental Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS from Bayero University Kano (BUK) in 1999.
Professor Mashi started his career in the academics in ABU as a Graduate Assistant in 1989 and rose to lecturer II in 1997 but left ABU in 1999 to take up appointment as a Principal Scientist with WATCON Environmental Consultants in Katsina. He returned to academics in December 2000 when he took up appointment as Lecturer I with the Department of Geography University of Abuja.
Professor Mashi rose to the rank of Professor in 2008. He was appointed Director Academic Planning in July 2014, a position he held until his recent appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
Other appointments he has held within and outside the University between 2009 and 2014 include as Acting Head of Department of Geography, Nasarawa State University, Keffi; Coordinator Masters and PhD Programmes Department of Geography, University of Abuja; Director General and Chief Executive, Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, Federal Capital Territory Administration, Abuja (2009-2010); and as Head Department of Geography, Dean Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina between 2010 and 2012 when he was on secondment.Read more ....

Samuel Asala MBBS (ABU); PhD (Sheffield); FASN; DINMA was, until January 2016, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Abuja. He is a tenured Professor of Anatomy with over 37 years of University teaching experience and extensive research and administrative experience in Nigeria, United Kingdom, Japan, Zimbabwe and South Africa, He was the Foundation Dean of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and later Deputy Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Abuja. He was also the founding President of the Neuroscience Society of Nigeria. His research experience grew from the University of Sheffield where he obtained his PhD degree in Neuroanatomy through the Institute for Medical and Dental Research, Tokyo Medical and Dental University where he undertook postdoctoral research in biocybernetics to the Universities of Zimbabwe and the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg where he jointly established the Forensic Anthropology Research Units. As an Associate Professor, he was the Head of the Division of Morphological Anatomy at the University of the Witwatersrand. As a Professor of Anatomy, he became the President and Fellow of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria and pioneered anatomy teaching and curriculum development in two Nigerian Universities. He was a member of the National Universities Commission’s expert committee that set the Minimum academic standard for medical education in Nigeria in 2004. He was a member of the curriculum development committees at the University of Zimbabwe and the University of the Witwatersrand. In the latter institution, his committee developed the urogenital component of the student-centred, problem-based 4-year medical education curriculum suited to the health needs and experience of the South African population. He is the current Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Anatomical Sciences and a member of the Medical Ethics Society of Nigeria. He was recently presented the prestigious Development in Nigeria Merit Award (DINMA) by People State Resource Magazine in recognition of his contribution to the training of medical and paramedical personnel in Nigeria.

Born in Wamba, Nasarawa State on June 6th, 1963, El-Yaqub holds a B.Sc (Hons) degree in Accounting and a Masters degree in Economics, both from the University of Abuja. He also holds a Diploma in Accounting from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria and a certified National Accountant (CAN) certificate of the Nigerian College of Accountancy, Jos, among other academic and Professional qualifications.

El-Yaqub started his working career at the University of Abuja in February 1991 as an Executive Officer (Accounts) and rose through the ranks to the position of Deputy Bursar in October 2012. Other positions the new Bursar held in the University include Chief Accountant (Investment), Chief Accountant Uniabuja Consultancy Services and Chief Accountant, Main and Student Account Division, of the Bursary.
He has attended many professional and management courses within the country which include a Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) course organized by ANAN, and Workshop on Management Skills for senior Non-academics organised by the Ford Foundation.
El-Yaqub is a member of many professional associations including Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Nigerian Institute of Management (AMNIM) and the Nigerian Economics Society (NES).

Dr. (Mrs.) R. I Echezona is a Chartered Librarian and currently the University Librarian  of University of Abuja, the first female University Librarian. She holds B. Sc. (Lib.Sc./Biology),. MLS(Library and Information Science),.  and PhD(Library and Information Sciene) of the University of Nigeria. She has about twenty years experience  as a staff in the library and over  sixteen years  post-qualification cognate experience. . Dr. Echezona has published journal articles in reputable Library and Information Science journals locally and internationally. She was one time the  Publicity Secretary of Nigerian Library Association, Enugu State Chapter and former National Treasurer of Nigeria Library Association. She is presently contributing to Library Education and Scholarship by teaching at the graduate level and is also an approved supervisor of the Master programmes of the department of Library and Information Science, University of Nigeria. Dr Echezona is the leader of the Use of Library and Study Skills (GSP111) for Medical and Health sciences, U. N. N. She just finished her Sabbatical leave at Benue State University,Makurdi. Dr. Echezona is hard working, results-driven, decisive, proactive and resilient. She is sociable, people oriented, dependable and reliable and she also has high personal mien that enhance results  in her  official responsibilities. Her research interest  are User Studies, Special Collection Management, Physically Challenged, Disaster Management, Conflict Resolution, Injury prevention and safety Promotion  and Information  and Communication Technology. Mrs. Swanta who is the fifth substantive Registrar of the University is also the second female Registrar of the University since its inception. She was until her appointment the Deputy Registrar in charge of Establishment Division and acting Registrar since July 1st, 2014.
Born in 1963, Mrs Swanta had her early education at L.E.A primary school, Bachit, Plateau state from 1972-1975, Government Girls Secondary School Shendam, in 1980 and the School of Preliminary Studies (SPS),Keffi from 1980-1982 for her A’levels. She proceeded to the University of Jos, Plateau State where she bagged a B.A. degree in Theatre Arts in 1986.
Mrs. Swanta started her University Administration career in 1987 at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue state and later joined the University of Abuja in 1989 as an Administrative Officer where she rose through the ranks. Read more...
