To train excellent and skilled health professionals with integrity and sound scientific decision-making ability that is very relevant to national and international practices thereby promoting the understanding, prevention and treatment of disease through excellence in teaching, clinical practice and medical research.
- Enable medical students to become competent medical practitioners in the face of modern changing health services.
- Provide a stimulating, open and supportive environment for learning by medical students.
- Enable students to think critically and develop the ability to learn independently.
- Develop in students those key skills and attitudes required to work in a multidisciplinary health team, valuing and respecting colleagues and teachers.
- Develop in medical students the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for high calibre medical research and clinical services.
BIOGRAPHY OF THE PROVOST
Ekundayo Stephen Garba is a surgeon and the current Provost of College of Health Sciences University of Abuja. He graduated with a degree of MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria 1988. He became a fellow of west African college o of surgeons in 1998; after which he was appointed lecturer I at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a consultant general surgeon with Ahmadu Bello University Teaching hospital, Zaria. He rose to the rank of Professor in 2009 and moved to College of Health Sciences University of Abuja, Abuja in 2013 where he has been contributing his own quota to the growth of the College. He was the Head of Surgery from 2014-2018 before he was elected to the office of the Provost in February 2018. He reads a lot of Christian literatures at his spare time and is married to Pharmacist Abosede Oluwatoyin Garba. The marriage is blessed with three children: Oluwagbemiga, Oluwafunmilayo and Oluwayemisi.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
At a meeting of the University of Abuja Senate on the 25th October, 2004 chaired by Professor N. O.Yaqup, the visionary incumbent Vice Chancellor at the time gave approval to commence four new academic programs for the University viz Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculties of Engineering, Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture respectively. In October 2005, the University appointed Professor J.A.M Otubu as the foundation Dean of the Faculty and latter redesignated as foundation Provost of the College of Health Sciences when the Faculty was changed to a Collegiate System. The then Deputy Provost, Professor S.A. Asala succeeded Professor J.A. M Otubu as Acting Provost. He was in this capacity (2010-2014) when the College assembly appointed him as Provost in (2014-2016). Professor Kareem Airede, became the third Provost of the College from 2016-2018. The incumbent was elected into the office of Provost in 2018 by the College Assembly. The first set of Medical Students of the University were admitted in the 2005/2006 academic session. The College went through turbulent time to get approval from Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and National University Commission (NUC). However, the first set of Medical Doctors were inducted on the 2nd of December 2017 after 12 years on medical education. University of Abuja Teaching Hospital Gwagwalada was approved as the Teaching Hospital arm of the University by President Olusegun Obasanjo. The University has memorandum of understanding with the National Hospital, Abuja to complement the teaching, research and services of the University. Despite the over one decade of its existence, the College like the entire University of Abuja has suffered underdevelopment especially inadequate infrastructure and manpower. Moreover, the Medical School “Collegiate Status” still awaits Nigeria’s senate approval and presidential assent to function as an autonomous body.
