Welcome to the Department of Veterinary Medicine. The Department was created from the splitting into two of the former Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery in the year 2014. The Department of Veterinary Medicine is saddled with the responsibility of training undergraduate students in all areas of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Diseases viz–Large Animal Medicine, Equine Medicine, Small Animal Medicine, Swine Medicine, Avian Medicine, Laboratory Animal Medicine, Wild Life and Fish Medicine.
The courses in the Department of Veterinary Medicine are designed to equip students with the methodology and basic skills for conducting research, clinical diagnosis, treatment, prevention and control of livestock, companion animals, wild life and poultry diseases. The departmental lecturers are involved in research in various aspects of diseases and health management, as well as rendering clinical and consultancy services to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University.
The Department is equipped with facilities and expertise to offer clinical training for undergraduate students leading to the award of the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M). The department has also developed a robust curriculum for training postgraduate students, leading to the award of Masters of Science (M.Sc.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D).
