BRIEF HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT
The University of Abuja began officially in January 1988 when the Federal Military Government of General Ibrahim Babangida named its first Vice Chancellor, Professor Isa Mohammed. Academic activities commenced in the 1990/1991 session, precisely on 16th February 1991 when the first set of students began to attend lectures at the temporary campus in Gwagwalada. This pioneer set graduated in 1994, and in October 2008 the University commenced movement to the Main Campus, along Airport Road, Abuja. By 2016, seven faculties had been fully established at the permanent campus, namely: Agriculture, Arts, Engineering, Management Science, Science, Veterinary Medicine, and College of Health Science. Other faculties and programmes that still operate from the Mini Campus are: Education, Social Science, Law, the School of Remedial Studies and the Institute of Education, which runs the Sandwich programme.
VISION AND MISSION
The vision of the University of Abuja is “To become a world class institution that combines academic excellence with pursuit of the nation’s unity.” The mission is a follows:
To provide instructional, research and public service programmes appropriate for a University of high standing that guarantees academic excellence.
To operate a strong and virile distance learning component that ensures equal educational access to a large constituency.
To direct academic activities towards the needs of students from diverse ethnic, cultural and occupational backgrounds.
The aims and objectives of the University are spelt out in section 1(3) of the University law, Decree 106 of 1992 as follows:
1. To encourage the advancement of learning and to hold out to all persons without distinction of race, creed, sex or political conviction the opportunity of acquiring higher and liberal education;
2.To provide courses of instruction and other facilities for the pursuit of learning in all branches, and to make those facilities available on proper terms to such persons as are equipped to benefit from them;
3. To encourage and promote scholarship and conduct research in all fields of knowledge and human endeavour;
4. To relate its activities to the social, cultural and economic needs of the people of Nigeria;
5. To undertake part time courses in various disciplines to cater for the interest of the working class and those who could not benefit directly from full time University education; and
6. To undertake any other activities appropriate for a University of the highest standard.
Admission requirements into the Department of Theatre Arts are as specified by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as follows:
Candidates for the four-year degree programme should possess the Senior School Certificate (SSC) or the General Certificate o Education (GCE) or their equivalents with at least 5 credit passes including English Language, Literature in English and at least a pass in mathematics. In addition, candidates must have scores that are acceptable to the University Matriculation Examination (UME).
Candidates for direct entry admission shall possess 5 credit passes in the GCE or its equivalent of which at least two shall be at the Advanced Level, or 4 credit passes of which at least three shall be at Advanced Level provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination.
A Certificate or National Diploma (OND) or National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Theatre Arts in addition to 4 Credits at the SSC or GCE or its equivalent.
