The College of Arts and Education at inception had five Departments namely Counselling and Science Education, English and Literary Studies, Foundations, Arts and Social Science Education, History and Theatre Arts. By 2000/2001 academic session, the collegiate system was jettisoned by the University Senate in favour of a Faculty system, and the College of Arts and Education was split into two entities: Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education. The Faculty of Education became a full-fledged faculty with two departments: Department of Counselling and Science Education with four Degree programmes, and Department of Foundation Arts and Social Science Education with four Degree programmes as well.
To produce sound educationists, educators teachers of various disciplines and researchers who will be able to develop in students an appreciation and understanding of functional and lifelong education process.

The Faculty’s degree programmes were expanded in 2006 and the Departments restructured. Two additional departments were established by the University Senate. Currently, the Faculty has five Departments and 19 programmes as follows:
