Conference on Nigerian Islamic Scholars

Islam in Nigeria has, for decades, been shaped by towering figures of scholarship, spirituality, and reform whose intellectual and moral leadership transformed communities and inspired generations. From the pre-colonial era through the challenges of colonial rule to the complexities of post-independence Nigeria, Islamic scholars have played a decisive role in advancing knowledge, safeguarding values, and promoting peaceful coexistence within a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.

The theme of the Conference is: “Lives and Legacies of Nigerian Islamic Scholars: Lessons of Unity in Diversity.” It is convened to critically examine the lives and legacies of Nigerian Islamic scholars and to extract practical lessons for building unity in diversity. It will provide a rare opportunity for scholars, students, faith leaders, and the wider public to engage in a dialogue that bridges the past and present, ensuring that these legacies remain effervescent and relevant in shaping Nigeria’s future.

In examining their lives, works, legacies and particularly how their intellectual differences and engagements have contributed to fostering unity, the El-Mavericky Centre for Educational Research and Development in collaboration with the Department of Islamic Studies, University of Abuja, wishes to invite scholars and the general public to the International Conference scheduled to hold between 15th and 16th December 2025.

While the names in the sub-themes are not exhaustive, interested participants can examine other scholars and highlight their contributions in relation to the thematic foci.
