Information and Publications Unit
The Information and Publications Unit stated as part of the Vice-Chancellor, office in 1988 and since then, it has operates directly under the Vice chancellor’s office with the head of the unit reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Unit is charged with the responsibility of disseminating information about the University both within the university community and to the larger society, and to facilitate a good public image for the institution.
It also assists in the drafting of speeches, reports, submissions of the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor and Principal Officers of the University when necessary and ensures the circulation of the approved copies as required.
The Unit ensures the stocking of archival news materials on the University through cuttings, bound copies of newspapers/magazines, photo albums, etc on official functions of the University.
The Unit also formulates strategies to ensure good public relations and image for the University through constant interaction with the stakeholders of the system and the communities in the immediate environment of the institution, as well as coordinates publicity on the University in the media. It also assists in arranging familiarization tours, attendance at ceremonies, press interactions for the Vice-Chancellor while participating actively in the organisation of major university official functions such as convocations, inaugural lectures, matriculation etc.
The Unit handles any other responsibilities/assignments as may be directed by the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar.
Channel/Medium of Service
The Unit discharges its information dissemination responsibilities through the publication of a news bulletin on the activities of the university and occasional briefings to the press, press releases, paid advertisements in the electronic and print media. The university news bulletin is a monthly publication which reports official events, functions etc of the University including its officials. However, the staff strikes in the University have often affected the regularity of the publication of the bulletin. Currently for instance the April to June 2014 publications are on hold due to the strike action by the unions.
The Unit has a total of six staff comprising the head of the Unit, (a Deputy Registrar); two administrative staff who assist the head in the gathering and compilation of stories for the Bulletin; a photographer, a confidential secretary and an office assistant.
