University of Abuja and Chinese Institution Collaborate
The University of Abuja has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the China National Academy of Governance (CNAG) to promote knowledge exchange and strengthen institutional capacity between both institutions.
The agreement, signed on Thursday 26 June 2025 in Abuja, aims to deepen collaboration in areas such as leadership training, staff and faculty exchange, academic visits, scientific research, policy consultation, and public policy development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Patricia Manko Lar, expressed hope about the partnership. “We are happy to relate with you in all spheres of development,” she said. “Our University is proud to have many scholars who have studied in Chinese universities. As an institution, we have a lot to learn from China, especially in the areas of policy, human capital development, science, and technology. This agreement will enhance our capacity and help build a critical mass of intellectuals capable of influencing national policies at various levels. I am particularly happy with this relationship we are about to formalise with CNAG.”
Also speaking at the event, Vice President of the China National Academy of Governance, Professor Gong Weibin, stated that the patnership aligns with the broader vision of Nigeria-China relations, particularly following President Tinubu’s recent state visit to China.
“Our Academy plays a pivotal role in China’s governance structure,” Weibin stated. “One of our core responsibilities is training civil servants. We engage in international exchange and cooperation. We believe in mutual learning, and this agreement with the University of Abuja reflects our commitment to global partnerships that allow both parties to benefit.”
In his remarks, the Director of the Centre for Contemporary China-Africa Research, Professor Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, welcomed the collaboration, explaining the deep-rooted ties between China and Africa.
He said, “Africa and China are longstanding friends, and this relationship continues to grow stronger. We are eager to learn from China and equally pleased that China is open to learning from us. This partnership speaks directly to the theme of mutual learning and cooperation, which was one of the core outcomes of the last FOCAC held in Beijing in 2024. We have no more reliable partner than China.”
