Dr Olanrewaju Tejuoso is a medical practitioner (MBBS-University of Lagos), Distinguished senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2015-2019) and a dedicated healthcare advocate with a proven track record of transformative leadership. He was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Health throughout his tenure in the 8th assembly of the Nigerian Senate. He played a pivotal role in advancing Nigeria’s health sector, spearheading critical reforms in health insurance and cancer care. His commitment to national health is evident in his efforts as a nutrition champion, securing significant international funding to combat malnutrition in Nigeria. He also championed the implementation of the National Health Act 2014, ensuring that a minimum of 1% of the consolidated revenue fund of the federal republic of Nigeria is included in the health budget of the country, statutorily.
This led to the introduction of the Legislative Network for Universal health coverage (LNU) in Nigeria, bringing together frequently, all the chairmen of health committees in states, as well as the appropriation committees for the first time. This has resulted in more effective coordination of health interventions all over the country. Prior to his service at the federal level, he served in the cabinet of the Ogun State government from 2011 to 2015, variously as state commissioner in the Ministry of Special Duties in charge of power/water resources, Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Beyond his legislative contributions in the health sector, Dr Tejuoso served as the pro-chancellor/chairman, Governing Council of the University of Lagos and Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University (formerly University of Agriculture, Makurdi Benue State). He is presently the prochancellor/chairman, Governing Council of Yakubu Gowon University (formerly University of Abuja). He is also the alternate chairman for the Committee of Prochancellors of all federal universities.
In his sojourn in the private sector, he served on the board of a few corporate bodies, including Berger Paints Nigeria PLC, Custodian and Allied Insurance, Teju Industries Ltd., Iyalode Bisoye Tejuoso Hospital etc. He is the co-founder of Avicenna International School Lagos and Buckswood School Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The Senator attended the prestigious Igbobi College in Lagos for his secondary school and the University of Lagos Staff School for his primaries. He is a prince of the royal family of His Majesty, Oba Dr Adedapo Tejuoso, CON, Karunwi III, Osile Oke-Ona, Abeokuta, and married with children and grandchildren.
